AI clip generator: how to turn a long video into clips, and what to check

To turn a long video into clips with an AI clip generator, paste a link or upload the file to a tool like iaclips, which transcribes what's said, picks the moments that make sense on their own, crops them to vertical 9:16 and adds captions. Then you review each clip, move its start or end if needed, and download it. In iaclips, the free plan includes 30 minutes of video every 30 days, with no watermark and no credit card.

What does an AI clip generator do?

It turns a long video where people talk into several short vertical clips for TikTok, Reels or Shorts. It picks the moments based on what's said in the video. In iaclips, it works in these stages:

  • Transcribe: everything that's said becomes text, with the exact time of each word.
  • Find stories: it picks the parts that make sense without the rest of the video, like a story, an explanation or a complete answer.
  • Set start and end: each cut is adjusted so it doesn't start mid-sentence or stop before the point lands.
  • Cut and render: each part is cropped to vertical 9:16 (1080 × 1920 pixels), framed on whoever is talking, with animated captions.
  • Write the post: each clip comes with a title, a description and hashtags in the video's language.

How do I turn a long video into clips with iaclips?

You paste a link or upload the video, pick a few options and get the clips back. Step by step:

  1. Paste a link or upload the video

On the home page, paste a YouTube link (youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, /shorts/ or /live/) or upload the file, then click Make clips. You sign in with your Google account.

  2. Choose what to process

The whole video or just one part: under From and To, type, say, 10:00 to 40:00. On the free plan each video can be up to 30 minutes long, so pick a part of a longer one.

  3. Choose the length and how many clips

Under Length, Complete stories (up to 3 min) or Shorter (up to 90 s). Under How many clips, Only the strongest (recommended) or More clips, some less rounded. Then the caption and title styles. Everything has a default.

  4. Confirm and process

Check the box confirming the content is yours or that you have the right to use it, and click Process. The app shows how long it usually takes for that length: about 12 minutes for 30 minutes of video. You can close the page; we'll email you when the clips are ready.

  5. Review each clip

Open a clip to see its transcript. Click Start here or End here on a sentence to move the start or the end, remove a sentence, or click a word to fix it. Only that clip is rendered again.

  6. Download and post

Download one clip, or all of them with Download all. Copy the title and the post text with its hashtags, and upload the clip to TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

On a computer with Chrome, the iaclips extension saves you copying the link: a button under the YouTube video opens it in iaclips with the link filled in. Add to Chrome

What should I check in each clip before posting it?

That it tells a complete story, starts and ends in the right place, has captions that match what's said, and shows whoever is talking. The AI makes the first cut; you decide whether it's ready to post.

  • A complete story: someone who never saw the full video understands what it's about and why it matters. If the clip opens with “and that's why…” or “like I said”, it's missing context.
  • Start and end: it shouldn't begin mid-sentence or cut off before the conclusion. In iaclips you fix that with Start here or End here on the right sentence.
  • Captions: names, brands, numbers and technical words are what usually go wrong. In iaclips you click the word and fix it.
  • Framing: going from horizontal to vertical drops most of the picture. In iaclips you pick Automatic (follows whoever is talking), One person (always the same person) or Whole frame (the full picture, with bars above and below). Changing the framing renders the clip again in about 1 to 3 minutes.
  • Title and post text: they should say what the clip is about without promising more than it shows.

If a clip doesn't work, in iaclips you can swap it for another story found in the same video (Other stories in this episode) or delete it.

Is there a free AI clip generator without a watermark?

Yes. In iaclips, the free plan includes 30 minutes of video every 30 days, with no watermark and no credit card; each video can be up to 30 minutes long. Other AI clip tools also have a free plan or a free trial, but not all of them export without a watermark on the free plan:

From each tool's own pricing or help page, checked October 20, 2026. They change often, so check the link before you choose. Prices, hours of video, languages and longest video for each: the full comparison. If you need more than 30 minutes in iaclips, Creator is $12 a month for 5 hours of video and Pro is $29 a month for 12 hours. Minutes are only used when a video gets clips.

Which videos does it work with?

Videos where people talk: podcasts, interviews, talks, classes, webinars and Just Chatting streams. It works best with videos over 10 minutes. The AI picks moments from what's said, so a video with nobody talking gives it nothing to work with.

  • Languages: iaclips detects the language, or you pick it: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Captions, title and post text come out in the video's language.
  • YouTube links: up to 4 hours, finished livestreams included. From a link, iaclips can't download private, members-only or age-restricted videos; upload the file instead.
  • Files: a video file, up to several GB. An audio-only podcast doesn't work yet, because the clips need video.
  • Videos with captions already burned in: iaclips covers them with its own, but you'll get a cleaner result from the original without captions.
  • Not a fit: videos with no talking, like music or gameplay without commentary. If iaclips hears nobody talking, it says so and nothing is charged.
  • Only use videos you have the right to cut and post: your own, or someone else's with their permission.

What if the clips are for TikTok, Shorts, or come from a stream?

The steps are the same; a few details change per platform. For TikTok, read how to make TikTok clips from a long video. For YouTube, how to turn a YouTube video into Shorts. If you streamed on Twitch, Kick or YouTube, how to clip a stream. And if your video is a podcast, how to turn a podcast into clips.

iaclips only captions the clips it makes; it isn't a caption editor for a whole video.

Frequently asked questions

What's a free AI clip generator?

iaclips is one: paste a YouTube link or upload the file and get vertical clips with captions, a title and post text. The free plan includes 30 minutes of video every 30 days, with no watermark and no credit card. OpusClip, Vizard and CapCut also have free plans.

Can I make AI clips without a watermark for free?

Yes. iaclips adds no watermark on any plan, the free one included. CapCut's Long video to shorts page says its clips come without watermarks; OpusClip and Vizard add one on their free plans, according to their own pages checked October 20, 2026.

Can AI clip a video longer than an hour?

Yes. In iaclips, a YouTube link can be up to 4 hours long, and on Creator or Pro an uploaded file can be as long as the hours you have left that month. On the free plan each video can be up to 30 minutes: from a longer one you pick the part, say minute 10 to 40.

How many clips does it make from one video?

It depends on the video: iaclips delivers the stories that stand on their own, not a fixed number. With Only the strongest (the recommended option) you get fewer clips; with More clips, some less rounded, you get more. If a video has no stories worth posting, the app tells you.

How long are the clips, and in what format?

In iaclips, complete stories run up to 3 minutes and shorter clips up to 90 seconds. They come out vertical 9:16, 1080 × 1920 pixels, with the captions burned into the video: the format of TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Do I still need to review the AI's clips?

Yes, it's worth it. Check that each clip tells a complete story, starts and ends well, has the right captions and shows whoever is talking. In iaclips you adjust all of that from the clip's transcript, sentence by sentence, without opening a video editor.
