Convert video to GIF for free

Pick a video (an MP4, MOV or WebM), mark the moment you want, up to 30 seconds, and save it as an animated GIF. Crop it square or vertical, or speed it up, if you like. It all happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded to a server, you don't need an account, and the GIF has no watermark.

How to turn a video into a GIF

  1. Choose the video

Tap Choose a video and pick an MP4, MOV or WebM file from your phone or computer. It opens right away, because it isn't uploaded anywhere.

  2. Mark the moment

Animated GIF is already selected, with the first 30 seconds marked (or the whole video, if it's shorter). Drag the handles to the moment you want and, if you like, change the shape to square 1:1 or vertical 9:16.

  3. Save the GIF

Tap Convert and save. When it's done, you see it on the page; download it or, on a phone, keep it with Save or share.

What you can do

  • GIFs of up to 30 seconds

Up to 480 pixels on the longest side at 10 frames per second, a size made for chats and web pages. Before you save, you see roughly how big it will be.

  • MP4 to GIF, MOV to GIF

Any video the page opens can become a GIF: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, from your phone's camera, a screen recording or a download.

  • Square, vertical or 4:5

Crop the frame and drag it to choose which part of the picture ends up in the GIF.

  • Faster or in slow motion

Speed it up to 4× to fit more into 30 seconds, or slow it down to 0.25× to show a movement in detail.

  • Rotate and mirror

Turn the picture in 90° steps or mirror it before converting.

  • Your video stays on your device

Your browser makes the GIF. There's no upload, no processing queue to wait in, and no copy of your video on any server.

Questions

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds. If the moment you want is longer, speed the video up (at 2×, 60 seconds of the original fit) or pick a shorter part. A longer GIF gets too heavy, and on a phone the page could run out of memory making it.

Why is the GIF bigger than the video?

GIF is a format from the 1980s and compresses far less than an MP4, so a few seconds can weigh several MB. To make it smaller, pick a shorter part or a square frame. Before you save, the page shows the estimated size.

Does the GIF have sound?

No: the GIF format holds no sound. If you need the audio, pick MP4 (video) under Format for a short video, or Audio only: MP3 to keep just the sound.

How do the colors look?

Each frame uses up to 256 colors, the most the GIF format allows, with its own palette. Most videos look fine; in smooth gradients, like a sky, you may see banding.

Does the GIF loop?

Yes: it loops forever, from the first frame, in any app or browser that shows animated GIFs.

Is my video uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser, on your own device, and the page never sends it to a server. That's why it starts right away, even when the video is several GB.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes: in Safari on iPhone, in Chrome on Android, and on a computer in an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. On a phone, tap Save or share and choose where to keep the GIF.

Which formats does it take?

It opens MP4, MOV (like the iPhone's), WebM and MKV videos. The same video can also be saved as MP4, MOV or WebM, or just its audio as M4A or MP3.
